Chapter 19
Bree
She sits on the floor with the others, warming themselves around the wood stove while they eat a meager meal of canned tuna and corn with crackers.
âIâm sorry I canât offer you more, but we are rationing our food supply. This is actually a double ration, if you can believe that,â Dean explains as he sits down beside her and Zach.
Bree studies whatâs left of the food on her plate. Half a can of tuna, three crackers, and a quarter of a can of corn reduced to scattered kernels and bits of fish in a matter of seconds. She chases them around her plate with a spoon for a while.
âIâm still hungry,â Gaby says. She crosses her arms in a huff as she sets her plate down with the corn and crackers untouched.
Dean stares fixedly at the plate for a moment before cracking a smile and gesturing to it. âYou havenât finished your foot yet.â
âI donât eat that,â Gaby says, making a face.
All eyes turn to her. From across the room, she gets an ugly look from Lance. He came to join them while Bree and the kids were getting showered and changed.
âIâll eat it,â Zach says, grabbing her plate.
Deanâs smile twitches. âYou should eat your veggies. Itâs good for you.â
âCrackers arenât veggies,â Gaby says.
âAll the same.â
Bree studies Dean, wondering what thoughts are lurking beneath his polite smile, but she decides not to make a thing out of it. âChimeras only eat meat,â she explains.
âIs that right? Well. You learn something new every day.â
Bree washes a mouthful of crackers down with a murky glass of water that tastes like itâs been boiled. That gives her a hint that maybe they donât have running water on the island. But then how had they managed to take a shower?
After lunch, Dean directs everyone to pile their plates in the sink. He produces a bucket of water from beneath the sink, along with a dish sponge and a bottle of detergent. Glancing around, he points to Jessica. âYou.â
âMe?â she asks with eyebrows raised while holding a hand to her chest.
âYouâre on dish duty today.â
Jessica rocks back on her heels. âWhy me?â
Dean smiles thinly at her. âBecause itâs my home, and my food, and I say so.â
Jessica frowns and her gaze turns to Bree. âShe can wash dishes just as easily as I can.â
âIâm sure she can, but I didnât ask her. I asked you. And it wasnât a request. Everyone in the resistance needs to earn their keep. There are no free meals, and no favorites. Weâre all equals here.â
âThen how is that Bree and her kids are all clean and smelling like daisies, but when I tried to use the shower, nothing but a trickle came out?â
âFirst come, first serve,â Dean explains. âWe donât have running water here, so weâre rationing shower time, and the tank has to be refilled each time itâs used. Speaking of which, Bree, let me show you how to do that now.â
