Chapter 19

Bree

She sits on the floor with the others, warming themselves around the wood stove while they eat a meager meal of canned tuna and corn with crackers.

“I’m sorry I can’t offer you more, but we are rationing our food supply. This is actually a double ration, if you can believe that,” Dean explains as he sits down beside her and Zach.

Bree studies what’s left of the food on her plate. Half a can of tuna, three crackers, and a quarter of a can of corn reduced to scattered kernels and bits of fish in a matter of seconds. She chases them around her plate with a spoon for a while.

“I’m still hungry,” Gaby says. She crosses her arms in a huff as she sets her plate down with the corn and crackers untouched.

Dean stares fixedly at the plate for a moment before cracking a smile and gesturing to it. “You haven’t finished your foot yet.”

“I don’t eat that,” Gaby says, making a face.

All eyes turn to her. From across the room, she gets an ugly look from Lance. He came to join them while Bree and the kids were getting showered and changed.

“I’ll eat it,” Zach says, grabbing her plate.

Dean’s smile twitches. “You should eat your veggies. It’s good for you.”

“Crackers aren’t veggies,” Gaby says.

“All the same.”

Bree studies Dean, wondering what thoughts are lurking beneath his polite smile, but she decides not to make a thing out of it. “Chimeras only eat meat,” she explains.

“Is that right? Well. You learn something new every day.”

Bree washes a mouthful of crackers down with a murky glass of water that tastes like it’s been boiled. That gives her a hint that maybe they don’t have running water on the island. But then how had they managed to take a shower?

After lunch, Dean directs everyone to pile their plates in the sink. He produces a bucket of water from beneath the sink, along with a dish sponge and a bottle of detergent. Glancing around, he points to Jessica. “You.”

“Me?” she asks with eyebrows raised while holding a hand to her chest.

“You’re on dish duty today.”

Jessica rocks back on her heels. “Why me?”

Dean smiles thinly at her. “Because it’s my home, and my food, and I say so.”

Jessica frowns and her gaze turns to Bree. “She can wash dishes just as easily as I can.”

“I’m sure she can, but I didn’t ask her. I asked you. And it wasn’t a request. Everyone in the resistance needs to earn their keep. There are no free meals, and no favorites. We’re all equals here.”

“Then how is that Bree and her kids are all clean and smelling like daisies, but when I tried to use the shower, nothing but a trickle came out?”

“First come, first serve,” Dean explains. “We don’t have running water here, so we’re rationing shower time, and the tank has to be refilled each time it’s used. Speaking of which, Bree, let me show you how to do that now.”

Bree and her kids follow
